Bhutanese Ema Datshi

The National Dish of Bhutan Ema Datshi (Feta and Tilapia Curry)

Bhutan is a small country to the Northeast of India.  While Bhutanese cuisine is heavily influenced by neighboring India, Ema Datshi showcases the distinct flavors of Bhutan.

Ingredients
  • 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp. cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp. black mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp. turmeric
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 4 cloves garlic – diced
  • 1 yellow onion – sliced
  • 1 red pepper – sliced
  • 1 jalapeño – sliced
  • 2 tomatoes – sliced
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tilapia fillet – thawed
  • ½ cup plain yogurt
  • ½ cup feta cheese
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Cayenne
Instructions
  1. In a large pot heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the cumin and mustard seeds to the oil. When the seeds begin to pop add the turmeric, paprika and garlic, and stir together.
  2. Add the sliced onions, red pepper, and jalapeno and stir until the vegetables are completely coated in the spice mixture. Add the tomatoes and the water and let stew for 10 minutes or until vegetables soften.
  3. Add the tilapia to the stew and cook until fish becomes tender (for about 10 minutes or until the fish starts to fall apart). Add the yogurt and feta to thicken the curry. Season with salt, pepper, and cayenne to taste.
